Khelo India: Empowering India’s Sporting Future

Khelo India is a flagship Government of India initiative launched in 2017-18 to revolutionize the nation’s sports ecosystem from the ground up.  Khelo India places special focus on traditional Indian games.

The programme is built on three pillars: structured talent identification, high-quality competitive platforms, and world-class sports infrastructure.

Khelo India is India’s largest grassroots talent hunt. Each year, 1,000 of the most promising young athletes identified through national competitions are awarded a scholarship of ₹5 lakh per annum for 8 consecutive years. This long-term financial support covers training, nutrition, equipment, and competition exposure, removing economic barriers to excellence.

Flagship National Competitions
Khelo India creates a structured competitive pathway through two premier annual multi-sport events:

Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG): For athletes in two age groups — Under-17 for school students and Under-21 for college students.

-Khelo India University Games (KIUG): A national-level platform where top university athletes from across India compete.

These games see participation from athletes representing 37+ States and Union Territories, making them among the largest sporting events in the country.
