A quiet, sweet tempered housewife Shashi Godbole (Sridevi) endures small slights from her well-educated husband and daughter every day because of her inability to speak and understand English. When she travels to New York for her niece's wedding, she secretly enrolls in an English language class. The movie follows her journey of overcoming this insecurity, learning the language, and gaining confidence and self-respect.
